Korean Cars to Kenya — Mombasa & East Africa Gateway

Mombasa is East Africa's main port for Korean LHD vehicles destined for landlocked neighbors — diesel SUVs, passenger vans and 1-ton commercial trucks routed from Busan.

Kenya itself is a right-hand-drive (RHD) market and Korean Encar inventory is LHD — so direct registration of Korean cars in Kenya is uncommon. The real business is Mombasa as the regional gateway: Korean LHD vehicles transit through Mombasa to LHD neighbors such as Ethiopia, DRC, Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan. Diesel SUVs, passenger vans and light commercial trucks dominate this trade.

TOPEX handles sourcing on Encar, Busan inspection, full export paperwork, and shipping to Mombasa via RoRo. We work with Mombasa-based freight forwarders who manage onward truck and rail to Addis Ababa, Kigali, Goma and Juba. Kenya itself enforces an 8-year age limit on direct imports; for bonded transit cargo to neighbors that constraint does not apply.

Why import from Korea to Kenya?

  • East Africa specialization — LHD transit routing to Ethiopia, DRC, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan
  • Korean diesel SUVs and 1-ton commercial trucks built for African road conditions
  • 8-year Kenyan age limit honored for direct-to-Kenya cars; not applicable for transit cargo
  • Mombasa freight forwarder partnerships for onward truck and rail transport
  • Busan inspection emphasizes undercarriage corrosion and cooling system (critical for tropical routes)
  • Telegram/WhatsApp tracking from Busan loading through Mombasa berth

RoRo is standard for cars and light commercial vehicles to Mombasa. Container is used for groupage shipments or for high-value cargo. Direct Busan → Mombasa sailings: 30–38 days. Mombasa congestion can add 5–10 days during peak; we book ahead when possible and prefer scheduled liners over tramp vessels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Generally no — Kenya is RHD. Some special-use exemptions exist (diplomatic, specific project vehicles) but for normal private use you would need to ship to a LHD country instead. The standard Kenya-routed business is transit cargo for Ethiopia, DRC and other LHD neighbors.

Kenya restricts direct imports to vehicles 8 years old or less from year of manufacture. This applies only to cars cleared for Kenyan registration — transit cargo bound for neighboring countries is not subject to Kenyan registration limits.

Truck convoy via the Northern Corridor (Mombasa → Nairobi → Moyale → Addis Ababa) typically takes 7–14 days depending on the Moyale border processing. Total Busan → Addis: 6–8 weeks end-to-end.

Diesel Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento (durable AWD for African road conditions), Hyundai Starex passenger vans, Kia Bongo and Hyundai Porter 1-ton trucks for commercial buyers.

Bill of lading, commercial invoice, certificate of origin, export declaration from Korean customs and inspection certificate. We supply all paperwork from the Korean side; Kenyan KEBS/PVoC inspection is arranged via your nominated Mombasa freight forwarder before shipment leaves Busan.
